“We
cannot always build the future for our youth, but we
can build our youth for the future.”….Franklin
D. Roosevelt
At the annual meeting of the Bloomingdale Township Board
of Auditors on April 14, 1970, a resolution was passed
establishing a Township Committee on Youth. The importance
of this resolution was the recognition by the Board that
meeting youth needs and combating juvenile delinquency
are community responsibilities. In 1997 a new resolution
was passed to create the Youth Service Bureau. The Youth
Service Bureau is a community-based agency, that routinely
delivers the kind of resource proven to be effective in
helping children and their families move toward finding
workable solutions. We strive to provide a comprehensive
program of human resources to meet the unique needs of
our youth and their families. Working cooperatively with
various community groups, such as the police, schools and
community mental health agencies, allows the Youth Service
Bureau to deliver more concise and timely assistance to
youth and their families. The two major service areas of
the bureau are: Family and Youth Counseling and the Youth
Education and Employment Program.
Family/Youth Counseling
Effective parenting, in certain instances, involves acquiring
professional support. The Family Counseling Program is
designed to offer parents and their children an opportunity
to engage in a process by which problems of childhood
and adolescence are discussed and addressed in a constructive
and effective way. This program is designed to help family
members clarify problem issues and initiate a “family
plan” geared toward finding acceptable solutions.
Helping youth with school-related problems is another
service provided by the Counseling Program. Here, parents
and their children can discuss anything from ways to improve
study habits to major school conflicts and truancy.
Youth Education and Employment
Here we offer township residents
16-21, Pre-Employment Skills
Workshops. This assistance offers
a unique opportunity
for youth who do not yet have the necessary skills to
secure meaningful employment.
For youth 13-16, the Chore Program is offered. This program
provides younger participants initial lessons in securing
and maintaining successful employment; also youth appropriate
opportunities for earning money, and fosters affirmative
community relationships.
Mentoring Program
Under our Mentoring component we actively participate in several programs. The Partners for Success Program, administered by the DuPage County Regional Office of Education, and the Community Consolidated School District 93 Program. Our involvement is directly with students living in Bloomingdale Township, who have been referred to these programs by their own home schools. The Partners for Success program was formulated in response to the Illinois law called, "The Safe Schools Act."
The purpose of the Partners for Success Program is to provide an option for students in grades 6-12 who have been suspended or on the verge of being expelled because of gross misconduct. Their mission is to provide multiple learning environments that utilize a variety of strategies. The mentor-ship component matches students with caring adults who commit time and energy to help students in a variety of ways.
The School District 93 program was formed in the year 2000 for students in grades 3 through 8. It's purpose is to work together with the community to provide a program for children by making connections and establishing positive relationships, along with school success.
